My Why
I didn't start dancing until I was 18 years old since dance was not something my family could afford when I was growing up. Despite this, God had a plan for me to pursue a passion that I had inside of me. My entry point into Hip Hop was through my Dad who is a singer/songwriter, formally a Lionel Richie impersonator. I quickly fell in love with Motown and Funk music and loved to dance around my house and at his shows. I didn't know it then but funk styles would end up being what I gravitated towards the most in Hip Hop dance. In 2003, I began my formal dance journey through Western Illinois University's dance department and the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center Dance Troupe. It was through the GBCC Dance Troupe that I truly found my love for Hip Hop music and dance.
I continued to study, train, and perform which ultimately led me to opening and running a primarily Hip Hop Dance Studio for 13 years . This is when I began to fully immerse myself into understanding and researching all aspects of Hip Hop. I received my MFA in Choreography in 2018 from Jacksonville University with a thesis focus on the intercultural influences in the Hip Hop movement. I am currently an adjunct professor in the Chicagoland area teaching Hip Hop Dance and Hip Hop Philosophy courses at several colleges among other styles.
The foundations, history, and culture of Funk and Hip Hop movement is something I am very passionate about and love to share with others!
